There are a lot of amazing Super- foods out there such as
the Ganoderma (Reishi), Goji berries, Noni fruit and Acai berries - and so it’s
very easy not to notice the not so ‘super food’ staring you in the face in your
kitchen everyday – The simple onion!
Yes, the simple lonely onion that is always there even when
you run out of salt!
Did you know that the onion is the richest dietary source of
Quercetin? Quercetin is a potent antioxidant that has been directly linked to
inhibiting stomach cancer.
Its strong antioxidant properties help protect the body from
cancer by reducing damage to our DNA in the cells. An important point to note is that Quercetin is found in most onions e.g.
shallots, yellow and red onions but NOT IN WHITE ONIONS. This may be a good
time to switch your onion preference!
The Quercetin in the onions also helps with thinning of
blood, heart problems, lowering of cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol.
It helps fight asthma and bronchitis, diabetes, infections and it acts like an
antihistamine for hay fever.
You can bet that I’m not done until I’ve told you its
benefits for your skin!
Many commercial creams use onion extract as an
anti-inflammatory in their creams to treat scars. The onion juice is also handy
for treating warts and freckles. Soak a slice of onion in cider vinegar
overnight, tape on to the warts and watch them go in weeks!
Onions are very rich in Sulphur, a vital mineral for the
health of our skin, hair and nails. Rubbing onion juice into the scalp at least
3 times a week is believed to help with hair growth, restoring hair follicles
and promoting strong hair. I’m going to try this one out. If anyone is happy to
try this out with me for a month, so we can compare notes, give me a shout!
So word of advice for the weekend - treat that last onion,
lost somewhere between all the potatoes in your kitchen cupboard with a little bit
more respect – it’s a true life saver!
Have a lovely weekend.
